「不忘初心」最合適的英文翻譯是什麼？

不忘初心，方得始終的整句翻譯（來自The Hazy Moon of Enlightenment）：

There is a passage of the Avatamsaka Sutra: "The very beginning mind itself is the most accomplished mind of true enlightenment" or "The very moment of raising beginner』s mind is the accomplishment of true awakening itself"

日語版『不忘初心』，使用也比較廣泛。（來自Zeami）

實際上『不忘初心，方得始終』的出處華嚴經有英文版，但未能找到材料。

佛家的話，深奧莫測。脫離具體的語境來把這句話翻成英文，十之八九會翻車。

如果是用「不忘初心，方得始終」這句話來激勵人的，那全句的英文翻譯，最貼切的可能莫過於 Steve Jobs 在 Stanford 畢業典禮上演講時送給畢業生的那句話：

Stay hungry. Stay foolish.

他該篇演講的最後三段話摘錄如下：

「...When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960"s, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and polaroid cameras. hunger, stay foolish（求知若飢，虛心若愚），其實這樣的中文還是沒有把其精髓翻譯出來，照我來看，用「不忘初心，方得始終」才是其真正含義，大家自己體會。

2） 第二種英文說法：stay

true to yourself

「做真正的自己」或「忠於自我」。我想「初心」就是你自己，但堅持自己恐怕是最難做到的一件事情。想做的事，總會因為各種壓力而中途流產，這種案例在我們身邊比比皆是。看看被這個時代所標榜的成功人士，無不是頂住壓力，咬牙死磕之人。

3） 第三種說法：stay

gold

這句話來自於Robert

Frost的一首詩「Nothing

gold can stay」（歲月留金）。在時光的沖刷之下，什麼都留不下。但唯有金子，不畏時間，不畏火煉，總能保持最初的那份純度。所以，stay

gold就是告誡我們要想金子一樣，無論環境怎樣變，不忘初心。

「不忘初心，放的始終」這句話實際上來自於《華嚴經》裡面的一段經文，其公認標準英文翻譯如上。the

very beginning mind指的是「最初的那個想法」，即「初心」；the most accomplished
mind指的是「最終的那個想法」，什麼想法呢，後面還有of結構的修飾，of true enlightenment指「真正的頓悟」；什麼叫「最初的想法即最終的頓悟」呢？其實就是「不忘出心，方得始終」的意思。

「Never forget why you started, and your mission can be accomplished.」這是「不忘初心，方得始終」的準確翻譯。厲害了！這可是來自英國、加拿大、西班牙等多名外籍專家集體智慧的結晶啊。
