英語「than」的用法？

其實並不是人群不一樣，而是文體不一樣。

X did ... more than Y did 是自然語序，一般口語或非正式書面語中使用。

X did ... more than did Y 是正式文體，一般在正式的書面語中使用。

但如果 Y 太長（比如複合名詞、或帶有太長的後置定語、或定語從句），也要使用 than did Y + attr. 模式，例如：

Teachers helped more students than parents did. 自然語序 (did 不可省略，否則會有歧義)

Teachers helped more students than did parents. 正式書面語

Teachers helped more students than did parents who were academically challenged. 因為 Y 太長

該句型兩點切記：

①切記不要在有歧義的時候省略助動詞：

例如：My brother knows him more than Mr Adams. (X) 有歧義必須加助動詞

An iPhone makes her happier than an iPad. (O) 無歧義不需要助動詞

②切記不要把過長的Y拆開：

例如：My parents visit me less frequently than the Whites do living next door. (X) do 要放在 than 的後面.

謝邀，看到The daily beast，有段時間也經常逛這裡，哈哈，不過沒像你看的那麼仔細。「than did control volunteers這個用法是對的，在國外的一些博士，研究生之類寫的論文或者專業性文章的話，都會經常這麼用，文章的作者Sharon Begley是一位很有名的writer，這樣就可以理解了，不過平時的話我們說than control volunteers did也是對的，只能說不同人群使用的習慣不一樣而已，control在這裡做的不是動詞，是名詞，大致看了下文章，前面提到了一個實驗，它做名詞時有「（科學實驗的）對照標準，對照物」的意思， control volunteers, whose emotions were not manipulated.放在一起，可以理解為「那些情緒沒被操縱的對照志願者」。
