In many countries, prison is the common solution to the problem of crime. However, another effective way is to provide people with better education so that they will not become criminals. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

The problem of crime has been one societies have faced for hundreds of years. Conventionally the solution to this scourge has been to catch the criminals and put them in prison. However, with crime rates not falling, there are some who argue that policies, like improving education, which perhaps could stop people becoming criminals in the first place are more effective.

The argument behind relying on prisons as the solution to crime is as follows. Prison removes criminals from the streets so that they cannot pose a danger to the public or commit offences. Whilst in prison individuals are rehabilitated and taught that their actions were wrong so that they do not reoffend when they are eventually released. Prison, as a severe punishment, acts as a deterrent for people who may have been tempted to commit a crime because they do not want to risk the consequences. However if this policy were effective we would expect to see crime rates go down not remain high as they have done.

In searching for alternative ways of addressing the problem of crime, some have proposed ensuring people receive a better education. One argument for this is that ensuring a better education, especially if that includes being taught about society, ethics and right and wrong, will mean that individuals are more responsible and understand that crime is wrong.

Secondly one of the main causes of crime is lack of economic opportunity, which can lead

to individuals getting caught up in criminal activity to make money because they feel they have no other choice. If ensuring a better education means that people are more likely to get a better, well-paying job then this would be an effective way of reducing crime rates.

However both of these arguments assume that crime is driven by economic or moral factors, both of which can be rectified by education. Yet there is plenty of evidence that this isn』t the whole story, and in fact there are psychological and emotional factors that also drive crime. Thus whilst prison and education do some things to solve the problem, they haven』t had a full effect because they do not address all the factors. A more comprehensive approach, incorporating punishment, education and other policies, would therefore be the most effective.
