Translation: Singingof Nightingale (Sergey Yesenin)(translated by: alexcwlin; edited by: Adam Lam)
Shortly after a battlewas over, a small detachment of German soldiers entered a village.
Scattered on both sidesof a road were tile debris (2). Inside a deserted garden,fire-charred trees were standing crooked listlessly. Singing of nightingalebroke silence on a summer day. The singing paused for afew moments, and then started again with renewed zeal.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------土兵們和軍官注意聽著,開始注視周圍的灌木叢和掛在道旁的白樺樹枝。
Soldiers and officerslistened attentively and began to pay attention to the surrounding shrub bushesand birch branches hanging by the side of the road. They found at a veryclose-by place a boy was sitting by riverbank and dangling his two legs. He was baldheaded in agreen jacket that was more or less the same color as tree leaves. In his hand was a pieceof wood and he was shaving something.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------「喂。 「Hey you, come over here,」an officer called the little boy.
The boy quickly put thesmall knife away inside his clothing and dust off the wood chips on his clothes. Then he walked up to theofficer.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------「呶,讓我看看!」 「Hmm, let me take alook!」 said the officer.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------孩子從嘴裡掏出一個小玩藝兒,遞給他,
The boy took out a smallgadget from his mouth and handed it to the officer. Then he looked at theofficer with his joyous blue eyes.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------那是個白樺樹皮做的口哨。It was a whistle madefrom birch bark.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------「挺巧!小孩子,「That is real neat, little boy.
You did a good job inmaking it!」 the officer nodded.轉眼間,他那陰沉的臉上閃出一種冷笑的光,「誰教你這樣吹哨子的?」Suddenly a grin flashedfrom his gloomy face and he said: 「Who taught you to whistle like that?」 「I teach myself. I also know how to chirplike a cuckoo.」
The boy imitated cuckooto chirp a few notes. Then he put the whistlein his mouth and started blowing.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------「村子裡就剩下你一個了嗎?」 「Are you the only one leftin the village?」 the officer continued his interrogation.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------「怎麼會就剩下我一個?「Why would I be the onlyone left?
Here there are sparrows, crows, owls, and many others.夜鶯倒是只有我一個!」Well, I am the onlynightingale.」----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------「你這個壞傢伙!」 「You rascal!」 the officerinterrupted the boy』s talking, 「I』m asking you if there are other peoplearound.」----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------「人哪?「Do you mean people?
Once war started all thepeople were gone,」 the little boy said unhurriedly.「剛剛一開火,村子就著火,「When bullets startedflying, the village started burning. Everybody screamed:『Beasts are coming! Beasts are coming!』 and they all ran away.」----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------「蠢東西!」 「Stupid fella!」 theofficer thought a bit and smiled disdainfully.
「Yo, do you know the wayto Sumengtasi Village?那個村子大概是叫這個名字吧?」I suppose that was thename of the village.」----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------「怎麼會不認識!」孩子很有信心地回答,「How could I not know it,」the boy replied confidently.「我和叔叔常到磨坊那兒的堤壩上去釣魚。「My uncle and I alwayswent to the dam by the mill to fish.那兒的狗魚可凶呢,能吃小鵝!」The pikes there areferocious and could swallow little ducklings.」----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------「好啦,好啦,帶我們去吧。「Alright, take us there. If you show us the rightway, I』ll give you this little thing,」 the officer said and pointed to hislighter.「要是你把我們帶到別處去,我就把你的腦袋擰下來。「If you take us somewhereelse, I』ll twist your head off.聽懂了嗎?」Do you understand me?」----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------隊伍出發了,行軍灶打頭,The troop started on itstrip with kitchen privates leading the way. They were followed by thelittle boy and the officer walking side by side. At times the little boyimitated the singing of nightingale and other times he chirped like cuckoo. His arms were swingingaround and brushing tree branches by roadside. Sometimes he bent down topick up pine cones and then kicked them up with his feet. It seemed he hadcompletely forgotten about the presence of the officer beside him.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------森林越來越密。The forest was gettingdenser as they moved forward. The meandering footpathpassed through thick birch woods and weed-overgrown open field. Then it went up a smallhill covered with a rich growth of aged pine trees.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------「你們這裡有游擊隊嗎?」 「Are there guerillashere?」 the officer suddenly asked.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------「你說的是一種蘑菇嗎?「Do you mean a type ofmushroom? No, we do not have thiskind of mushroom here. Around this place we onlyhave red mushroom, white mushroom and meadow mushroom,」 the boy answered.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------軍官覺得從孩子嘴裡什麼也問不出來,就不再問了。The officer felt he couldget nothing out of the mouth of this boy and so he did not ask anymorequestions.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------樹林深處,有幾個游擊隊員埋伏在那裡,樹旁架著衝鋒槍。Deep inside the forestseveral guerrillas were lying in wait with submachine guns set up beside trees. They looked out throughgaps of tree branches and could see the winding trail. Every now and then theywould say a few simple words. Then they would pushaside tree branches and focus on watching the distance. 「Can you hear?」 aguerrilla suddenly said.他伸直了腰,He straightened his body. It seemed the chirping ofsome bird was coming vaguely through the rustling sounds of tree branches.他側著頭,往叫聲那邊仔細聽,「夜鶯!」In tilting his head, hetried to listen carefully from the direction of the sound. 「Are you sure you didn』thear it wrong?」 another guerrilla said. He got tense and listenedcarefully but could not hear a thing. From the tree stump hetook out four grenades and put them in front of him just in case.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------「這回你聽見了沒有?」「This time aroundcouldn』t you hear it?」----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------夜鶯的歌聲越來越響了。 The person who firstcaught the sound of the nightingale stood in full attention as if he werefrozen stiff.他注意數著一聲一聲的鳥叫:「一,二,三,四……」He focused on countingthe number of bird chirrups: 「One, two, three, four…」 While he was counting, hetapped the beats with his hands.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------夜鶯的叫聲停止了。The nightingale chirpshalted.「32個鬼子……」 「Thirty-two devils in all,」the person said. Only guerrilla membersknew the meaning of these bird sounds. Then two cuckoo tweetswere heard.「兩挺機關槍。」 「There are two machineguns.」 he added.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------「對付得了!」 A full-beard man holdinga submachine gun said: 「We could handle that!」. Then he straightened upthe cartridge belt hanging from his waist. 聽鳥叫的那個人回答,「We should be able tohandle that!」 the person listening to the bird sounds responded.「我和斯切潘叔叔把他們放過去,「Uncle Stephan and I willlet them walk past us. When you open fire, we』llspray bullets from the back. After a few minutes, theGerman soldiers appeared behind the pine forest. But for those people whowere hiding inside the quiet forest, the singing had no fresh meanings. When the German soldierswalked to an open space in the forest, suddenly a whistle came out from thepine forest as if it was a reverberation in response to the child. The child suddenlyhalted, turned around and slipped out of sight in the forest. Gunshots broke thesilence among the trees. Before the officer had a chanceto grab his pistol, he rolled to the dirt by the side of the road. German soldiers hit bysubmachine gunfire fell down one by one. Moaning, screaming, and intermittentcommands filled the forest. The next day, beside anenclosure wall of a torched village where a small road forked out, the child waswearing the same green overcoat and sitting at the original river bank. He wasshaving something and often turned his head to look at the several roadsleading to the village as if he was waiting for somebody. Melodious nightingalesinging came out from the child』s mouth. Even people who were usedto listening to bird sounds would not be able to tell this singing apart fromthat of a real nightingale.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------附註:
