這次談談英國G5申請關於推薦信的處理（含乾貨）及常見誤區

你的學術興趣，你的PS說了算；

你的學術能力，你的推薦信說了算。

推薦信的重要性，經常被申請者忽視。

新的申請季忙得不可開交。下筆寫這篇文章，是因為中國孩子們勤奮努力想要申請好大學，可是對推薦信的認識卻太少了。也許是中國的教育向來都是「分數當先」，老師對孩子們鮮有深度的了解，更不要說孩子們對於自我的認識、未來的規劃、以及他們的學術和職業發展。

在思度輔導完Personal statement （文書寫作），國際學校的小A又開始犯愁。馬上就要開始UCAS申請了，推薦信應該怎麼寫，找誰寫，怎樣為自己的申請錦上添花…… 見過太多「雞肋」的推薦信，食之無味，棄之可惜。泛泛而談的誇獎，堆砌了大量浮誇又不怎麼實際的虛詞: remarkable, outstanding, most hardworking, smartest, surprising determination and perseverance, one of the greatest…. 遇上實在沒有話可以誇讚的同學，就只能寫寫套話，或是永遠不落下的「該同學學習認真，完成作業態度良好」。

小B（男生）和小C（女生）的推薦信是國際學校同一個老師寫的。發給我一看，哭笑不得。從頭到尾一模一樣，小C的she（她）有時還寫錯成了he（他）。大多數時候，老師們都準備好了一篇模版，改一改名字、細節，推薦信就完成了。於是大家的推薦信千篇一律，彷彿「複製黏貼」，改去性別的he和she，看不出來什麼區別。

小C嘆氣說，平時我在班裡也不太說話，老師跟我不熟啊。

要申請研究生的小T也有這個問題。在英國倫敦讀本科時雖然學習認真，拿到了一等學士學位（預估），但是和教授交流的時間很少。他鼓起勇氣找教授寫reference，教授卻說「你自己寫，寫完我簽字」。小T瞠目結舌。

推薦信有什麼用？當年我拿到LSE、港大、港中大等offer，就多虧了我兩位老師的大力推薦。那時的我對未來已有清晰的規劃，也多虧兩位導師能夠在推薦信中用不同方式，十分自然地提及我的強學術動機和職業發展潛力。他們對我了解極深，所以推薦信不是簡單的形容詞堆砌，或是一筆帶過學生的獲獎、社團活動經歷，然後再泛泛總結「該學生有領導力／團隊合作精神」。

因為有過這種經歷，我著手下筆或是修改的每一篇推薦信，都是活色生香的。教學這麼多年，如果仔細觀察，每一個學生都是不一樣的個體。文書強調學生的「個人體驗」，而推薦信應該和文書寫作相輔相成，從老師的角度，將學生的「個人體驗」做出一個最好的佐證。作為老師，看到的當然不應該僅僅是學生的成績、獲獎經歷，而是如何將學生的表現、成就、未來志向以真摯生動的語言體現出來，才能有區分度的體現學生更完整的人格。

好的推薦信，需要符合如下的條件：

· be 1 typed A4 page long a reference might be slightly longer in very exceptional cases; references which are very short can be interpreted as lukewarm （1張A4頁最好，不能太短，否則可見態度之敷衍）

· clearly indicate how long the referee has known the candidate and in what capacity （如何認識學生／認識多久）

· provide information about the candidates previous exam performance and their ranking in relation to their cohort or previous cohorts （學術成績與排名）

· provide other factual, concrete and comparative information about the candidates performance （事實性的、準確的、比較性的信息）

· include any distinctive achievements which differentiate a candidate from others （該學生與其他申請者相比的獨到之處）

以下是UCAS對推薦信的詳細要求：

Academic performance

Your reference forms an important part of the students UCAS application, alongside their achieved grades, predicted grades and personal statement. Please give realistic predictions for all qualifications that the student is taking. It is very helpful if these are given separately at the top of the reference. The majority of applicants also include their AS grades, (or unit marks) and while this may not be compulsory, we find it extremely useful as we prefer students who have achieved excellent grades throughout their studies. Thus your comments on their AS (Year 12) performance in addition to their A2 (Year 13 performance) are extremely helpful to us.

Context

It is also useful to have an idea of the student』s performance in the context of the overall levels of achievement at your school or college. Please also include your comments on the student』s capacity for study at university level. The following advice will help ensure that you are able to support your students with their application, giving them the best possible chance of success， hard work and attitude to study, and their suitability for the chosen programme, giving examples of their subject commitment. It is also helpful if you can give an estimation of the student』s ability to think for themselves.

其實大學的教授更想得到的佐證是，學生的學術技能和態度，是否可以成功適應大學的生活？學生的獨立思考能力和辯證性思維如何？他／她更適合填鴨式的教育還是啟發式的學習？學生是否在平時的學習生活中，主動進行深度思考很多課堂之外的學術知識？學生的是否能夠將其學術上的動力投入相關的課外活動／項目，進行一些具體的探索？

思度對於推薦信的常見問題解答：

1. 推薦信對申請到底重要嗎？

重要。和你的文書、成績單等等同等重要。特別是該大學沒有面試環節時，推薦信的重要性更高，因為大學想要從一個第三者的角度來對你進行觀察。如果你要申請獎學金的話，推薦信就更加重要了。一封泯然眾人矣的推薦信是無法說服學校錄取你的。

2. 如果老師不了解我怎麼辦？

如果老師不了解你，盡量給老師提供資料來展現一個更完整的你。你可以給老師看你的文書、你的成績單，和他約時間傾談你的專業、興趣、方向。當然，給老師留下好印象是必須的。

3. 如果老師讓我自己寫，我真的寫不了怎麼辦？
