The richest household in You Ma Di was Du Xiaokang』s family.

But its fortune plummeted in one morning to a completely different state.

Du family』s lone son had to quit school and accompany his father to herd ducks.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The small wooden boat was herding the ducks, and it had travelled for such a long distance that nobody knew how far.

When Du Xiaokang looked back and couldn』t see You Ma Di, he unexpectedly said to his father: 「I don』t want to herd ducks anymore.

All I want is to get back on shore and go home.」

He stood on the boat and tried to look back as far as he could.

But other than hazy mist over tree tops, there was nothing else.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Du Yonghuo』s face sank but wouldn』t look back once.

He brushed off Du Xiaokang』s teary request and kept sculling the boat to drive the ducks forward doggedly.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The flock of ducks was in a reverse fan-shape formation in front of the boat and strived to push forward.

The formation also set off a stream of fan-shape water current.

Each individual duck triggered a small fan-shape water current with its own body.

Within the grand fan-shape water current formation, these small water currents together had weaved a systematic pattern.

These flows of water currents, big or small, were quick-tempo and impetuous.

The front of the boat was filled with steady, perpetuating sounds of splashing water.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All Du Yonghuo wanted at that moment was for the ducks to keep swimming forward uninterruptedly without an opportunity to break for food or play.

It seemed any slow-down would cast doubt and fear on him respecting what was ahead just like his son, and that could cause him to give up on the idea of leaving You Ma Di.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Going forward was the only option.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All those familiar trees, villages, bridges, etc. continued to back off and turn into distant objects under the eyes of Du Xiaokang.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally the last bit of desire to turn back had dissipated.

Then Du Yonghuo slowly stopped the boat.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Over at that location, both the sky and water were unfamiliar sights.

Intermittently a boat would pass by, but the face on the boat was unacquainted to both Du Yonghuo and Du Xiaokang.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The ducks did not care less so long as there was water.

Water was their eternal home.

They started to look for food.

After feeding, they would quack toward the sky when they were in the mood.

There were no other sounds.

The space between sky and earth was so vast that the quacking sounded forlorn yet uplifting.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There was no way Du Xiaokang would still be thinking about his You Ma Di.

At that moment, all that occupied his mind was what was ahead, particularly how much further they had to go?

What was it like ahead of them on the way?

It was unknown what was in store further down the waterway.

The unknown was particularly thought-provoking for a youth.

He was sitting cross-legged at the bow of the boat and staring at the vast stretch of water.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Only patches of grass and sunken ground were in the surrounding but no household was in sight.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At nightfall, the first wisp of smoke came up from the mud cooking stove.

It was the only cooking smoke around.

Strands of smoke, carried by evening breeze towards and close to water surface, scattered slowly in all directions.

When the rice in the pot was fully cooked, steam from the solar-heated river water commingled well with the cooking smoke and it could no longer tell which was which.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When the moon rose to the sky from the east, Du Yonghuo and his son had started dinner.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The ducks were well-behaved.

On the massive water under the night, suddenly they felt they had become homeless drifters.

They circled around their masters』 boat for fear that they could be separated from the small boat—the one and only thing which they could depend on.

They buried their beaks inside their wings looking like they were sleeping without burdening their masters with worries over their well-being.

Sometimes they would take their heads out from the wings to peek at their masters on the boat.

Upon knowing the old and young masters were still on the boat, they would then return their heads inside their wings.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Both father and son did not want to go to sleep right away.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Du Xiaokang wanted to hear some noises, such as the mooing of cows or the barking of dogs, but that would be impossible.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At last Du Xiaokang felt tired and lay down on the mat inside the boat cabin.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That day』s routine was repeated in each of the following several days.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One day they finally arrived at the destination.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That was a real reed marshland—a sea of reeds which Du Xiaokang had never seen before.

It was evening when they arrived.

When Du Xiaokang』s looked as far as he could, he was frightened by the reeds which were like series of green waves, surging to the edge of sky.

That was the first time he really felt terrified after he left home.

The reeds, seemed like thousands of layers of mountains encircling the small boat, imposed on Du Xiaokang a sense of inescapability.

In looking at his father, his timid side as a child was showing through his eyes.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was apparent the father was taken aback as well.

But he had to stay calm in front of his son.

告訴杜小康,蘆葦叢里有蘆雁的窩,明天,他可以去撿蘆雁的蛋;

He told Du Xiaokang there were nests of reed geese in the growth of reeds, and on the next day they could go there to search for their eggs.

There were rabbits as well.

The rabbits』 fur over there was much like the reeds in color, and even if a rabbit was crouching in front of you, you might not be able to detect it at a glance.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After supper, Du Xiaokang calmed down somewhat from his jumpiness.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The air over there smelled good.

Tenths of thousands of acres of dark green reeds in summertime filled the atmosphere with a refreshingly sweet scent.

In the bush of reeds was a type of no-name fragrant grass which wisps of aroma permeated the sweet smell of reeds.

Du Xiaokang couldn』t help but took deep sniffs at the mix of scents from time to time.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Countless fireflies were flying over the reed leaves at edge of the water.

Sometimes when tenths or hundreds of them congregated together, they could actually illuminated water surface so much so Du Xiaokang could see a water fowl floating on top.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But all these could not drive away Du Xiaokang』s dread.

During bedtime, he would snuggle right up to his father and could not fall asleep for a long until very late into the night.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The next morning, both father and son went ashore the reed beach and found a suitable spot.

They used sickles to cut down lots of reeds and then tied them into bundles.

After a whole day』s work, they had built an enclosed duck coop for the ducks and a shack for themselves.

From then on, they would settle in there as their home and raise ducks in the reeds marshland until spring of the following year.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As days passed by, both father and son felt their greatest enemy, which closed in oppressively day by day, was loneliness.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In comparison, the type of loneliness experienced by Du Xiaokang from locking himself behind red door after quitting school was nothing compared to this.

For over ten days, they had not run into another soul.

Du Xiaokang could only talk to his father.

Strangely dialogues between his father and him became increasingly simple and dry.

Other than absolute necessity to converse, they didn』t know what else to say.

Over time in lieu of those previously necessary conversations, they were able to get messages across through eye contacts, or simply mutual understanding.

Words were much abbreviated.

This abbreviation, however, seemed to be reinforcing loneliness a step further which seemingly the entire world was plagued with similar loneliness.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Du Xiaokang started to miss home and it was getting worse as days wore on.

Until one night he dreamed about mother.

He started bawling out loud and woke up his father in surprise.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He cried: 「I want to go home.」

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Du Yonghuo no longer blew up indiscriminately.

He felt it was a bit cruel for him to drag a child at such a young age into his plan.

He felt regretful towards his son.

But then other than comforting his son by stroking him with his big hands, there was really nothing he could do.

He said to Du Xiaokang: 「Next year before spring and budding of willows, we will go home.」

He even promised his son: 「I will let you study without a worry in the world….」

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Afterwards, both father and son had made peace with reality that they could not avoid loneliness.

Things had gone better this way.

As time lingered on, they were no longer apprehensive about facing nothing but drifting clouds in the sky, massive reeds in marshland, and wisps of cooking-smoke in the shack.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ducks grew with amazing speed, and before long they looked fully grown.

They covered a large area when they were floating on water surface.

Du Xiaokang was destined to be toughened up there, and what had been toughening him up were those big and fat ducks which his father had taken so much care into looking after.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One day the weather was the worst since they left home.

Early in the morning the sky was overcast and everything turned dark—the sky, the river, the reeds, and even the wind felt by Du Xiaokang.

When midday approached, rumbling thunder, like tenths of thousands of charging war chariots, rolled towards their direction from edge of the sky.

Before long, torrential storm started hysterically.

Suddenly the sky and earth turned pitch dark as if the end of the world had descended.

All around, the air was filled with sounds of screeching wind and snapping reeds.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All of a sudden, the duck coop was blown open by the wind.

When father and son rushed up in an attempt to repair it, a whirlwind almost took the duck coop up the sky in a spiral.

Du Yonghuo screamed out loud: 「Oh my ducks,」 and almost fainted.

In front of his very eyes he saw the ducks were separated into many groups by the wind and disappeared in a flash.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Du Xiaokang ignored his father and chased after a group of ducks.

There were sixty to seventy fowls in the group and they were scrambling around to escape amid booming thunder sounds.

He followed them closely while brushing aside the reeds as he went.

Even so, his face was cut by reed-blades times and times again.

At a sole, he felt a sharp pain but he didn』t bother to check.

He knew it was an old wound to his foot impaled by reeds last year.

He was calling for his ducks while he was chasing.

But on this day, these normally tame little things were running around like crazy as if they were chickens without their heads.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shortly before the storm blew over, there were still over ten ducks missing.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Du Yonghuo, at seeing his son』s scratched-up face and purple lips, said: 「You go inside the shack to take a rest.

Let me go and find them.」

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Du Xiaokang shook his head and said: 「Let』s break up to look for them.」

Then he took off.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When night fell, Du Yonghuo came back to the shack empty-handed but couldn』t find Du Xiaokang.

He shouted for his son.

Other than silence after rain, there was no response.

He went toward the direction where Du Xiaokang was heading to look for him.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Du Xiaokang found those ten and some odd ducks but couldn』t find his way out in the reed marshland.

All those reeds looked the same and the reach of layers and layers of them seemed boundless.

The ducks were running all over the place and it didn』t take long for him to lose his direction.

When the sky turned dark, he stopped and shouted out loud for his father.

He couldn』t hear a response, just like his father couldn』t hear his response.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Suddenly Du Xiaokang felt dead tired.

He stomped some reeds flat and lay down.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Those ten and some odd shaken-up ducks surprisingly crouched down and snuggled right up to their master.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Du Xiaokang could smell scent of the duck』s down.

He turned his head aside and almost buried his face into the fluffed up feather of a duck.

He cried, not from sadness, but for reasons which even he could not explain.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The sky cleared up after the rain and it was brighter than any other nights.

In all his years, Du Xiaokang had never seen such a blue sky and bright moon.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He dug up a few strands of white, tender reed-roots right next to him and chewed them in his mouth.

In looking at the sky which reminded him of his hometown, he couldn』t help but thought about his mother, his friend Sangsang and many other kids in You Ma Di.

He did not cry.

Suddenly he felt he had matured and toughened up.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The next morning Du Yonghuo found Du Xiaokang lying quietly on reeds.

Whether the boy was overly exhausted, or had collapsed from hunger and fatigue, Du Yonghuo actually could not wake him up.

The father carried the limp body of his son on his back and headed towards the direction of the shack.

The bottom of a Du Xiaokang』s foot was still dripping blood—on the grass, on his father』s footprints, and on feather of the flock of ducks following them.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The ducks had grown up and become honest-to-goodness ducks.

Their feathers were shiny and densely waterproof.

The drakes looked increasingly handsome.

Their blue and purple feathers of various shades glittered under the sun like satin.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One morning in August, Du Xiaokang opened the gate of the duck coop to let the ducks out into the water.

Suddenly he saw a white object in the grass.

In surprise he picked it up and shouted to the shack: 「Egg, Dad.

It』s a duck』s egg.

A duck has laid an egg.」

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Du Yonghuo took the slightly warm egg from his son』s hand and said repeatedly: 「Egg』s been laid.

Egg』s been laid.」
