The difference is "cute" is more about appearance and "lovely" can be used to describe something pleasing or satisfying things or situations as well.

Cute

  • sweet, attractive, but not necessarily in a sexual way (to me, not beautiful)
  • often used to describe children and young animals
  • often used to describe small things

Examples:

  • Oh, your cat is so cute!
  • I love babies; theyre so cute!
  • He has a cute nose!

Lovely

  • beautiful, attractive
  • can be used to describe the whole person rather than just appearance
  • can be used to describe a situation that is pleasant or enjoyable

Examples:

  • I had a lovely evening with you!
  • The weather is lovely today!
  • Thats a lovely dress!

Sentences where they can both be used:

  • Shes so cute! (She is probably a child)
  • Shes so lovely! (She is probably over 20 or she could be a child with a nice personality and appearance)
  • Your apartment looks lovely! (Well-decorated in a mature way)
  • Your apartment is so cute! (Small and pretty)

I know its common in China to call females of almost any age "cute" or "可愛", but in many Western countries, its weird to call a woman cute after about 20.

I hope this is helpful.

For starters, "cute" is less frequently used to describe a situation. You could have a lovely time, but not a cute one. Nor could you have a cute meal. You could say "That was cute." after you just saw something like a nice puppy.

The two words also have different connotations in most contexts. Lovely is a word to describe someone or something wholesome, hearty, earthy, delightful and/or kind. Cute is, on the other hand, like an innocent version of the word "sexy".

A Cute Cat

Essentially: If someone is lovely, you want to sit back in your comfy chair and have a nice meal or drink while you chat with them. Youll have a lovely time.

Something cute, on the other hand, makes you want to grab it and hug and cuddle it because its irresistibly adorable, be it animal, child (your own or not) or your significant other.

比如,awwww, your cat is adoooooorable!

Lovely=好

Cute=可愛
